The Glenlivet is the No. 1 malt whiskey consumed in the US and the No. 2 in the world. Since its appearance in the early 1800s, The Glenlivet has been the ultimate single malt whisky. It has inspired an entire region, is "the single malt that started it all", and laid the foundation for creating the single malt whiskey category as we know it today.
It is the single malt whiskey that defined the style of the Speyside region and is the malt that all other Speyside malts respect and recognise. The pure quality and smoothness of The Glenlivet make it stand out from other malts. The rich mineral water from the Josie Well spring, the special shape of the stills used, as well as the careful and slow maturation in selected American oak barrels, are the main elements that give, throughout the range of The Glenlivet, a particularly sweet and fruity aroma and a velvety, creamy taste.
Glenlivet was one of the first to use French oak to make whiskey, a technique that has since been imitated around the world. The Limousin oak we use is cut in the Dordogne region of France, where it is often used to mature cognac. Its low density allows the whiskey to sink deep into the wood, and we carefully control how long the whiskey matures in the barrels so as not to overpower the desired effect: a unique, pleasant spicy flavor.
